Korean Dental Care for International Patients: What Matters Beyond Cost

Beyond price, international patients should check who plans and performs the work, whether they can discuss risks clearly in their language, whether the timing fits their trip, and how aftercare will work at home. At Lucid Dental Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, consultations are available in English, Japanese and Chinese.

Key facts

  • Korean dentists must pass a national licensing exam run by KHPLEI, which added a clinical skills test in 2021.
  • Lucid's lead dentist, Dr. Park Hyun-min, is certified in esthetic dentistry (심미치과 인정의) and holds a DDS from Kyung Hee University.
  • Lucid is open until 20:30 Tuesday to Thursday and 10:00–16:00 on Saturdays.
  • The NHS advises choosing treatment abroad on quality of care and being clear about aftercare before you go.
  • Treatment records and itemized receipts are available on request.

Price is usually what first puts Korea on a traveller's list. It should not be the only thing that keeps it there. A dental plan you can actually finish, explain to your dentist at home and look after for years matters just as much as the number on the quote. This post looks at the non-price factors international patients tend to overlook.

What matters more than price when choosing a dentist abroad?

Four things: who plans and does the work, whether you can communicate clearly, whether the timing fits your trip, and what happens after you fly home. A lower fee helps little if the plan cannot be completed before your flight or no one at home can maintain it.

The UK's NHS gives similar advice in its treatment-abroad checklist: base your choice on the quality of care rather than the holiday, be wary of pressure to decide quickly, and be clear about how aftercare will be coordinated. The UK General Dental Council also suggests checking whether the country has a dental regulator and talking to your own dentist first.

Who will plan and carry out my treatment?

Ask for a name, not just a clinic brand. In Korea, dentists must pass a national licensing exam run by the Korea Health Personnel Licensing Examination Institute, which added a clinical skills test for dentists in 2021. Beyond the license, look at each dentist's training in the work you need.

At Lucid Dental Clinic, the lead dentist is Dr. Park Hyun-min, a dentist certified in esthetic dentistry (심미치과 인정의) with a DDS from Kyung Hee University and continuing education in implants and endodontics. His clinical focus is restoring and replacing teeth, such as veneers, crowns and implant restorations. You can read more on Dr. Park's profile.

What should I compare besides the fee?

Why does communication matter so much in dental care?

Because consent depends on it. You should understand what will be removed, what is permanent, what the alternatives are and what could go wrong. For veneers, for example, most porcelain options need some enamel removed, which cannot be undone. If you leave a consultation unsure about any of that, ask again. How do I plan for care after I leave Korea?

Plan it before you book. Your dentist at home is the person who will check your work for years, so give them what they need:

  1. Tell your home dentist your plan before you travel and ask what records they would like.
  2. Ask for copies of X-rays and scans taken in Seoul.
  3. Request written details of materials, implant brand and size, and veneer type.
  4. Keep itemized receipts for any insurer or tax purpose at home.
  5. Book a home check-up for a few weeks after you return.
  6. Save the clinic's WhatsApp so you can send photos if something feels wrong.

Why won't I find patient reviews on Korean clinic websites?

Korea's Medical Service Act strictly limits medical advertising, so clinic websites avoid patient reviews, ratings and before-and-after claims. That means you need to judge a clinic by what it can show you: the dentist's training, a clear written plan, transparent reference fees and honest answers about risks. Our guide on how to choose a dentist in Korea lists more questions to ask.

Is Korea a good fit for everyone?

No. If your treatment needs many visits over months and you cannot return, or if you have a medical condition that needs close coordination with your doctors at home, treatment near home may suit you better. A consultation can help you decide. Individual results vary; a consultation and exam are required.

Frequently asked questions

Should I tell my home dentist I am having treatment in Korea?

Yes. They know your history and can flag risks, and they will be the one maintaining the work. Many dentists are happy to review a treatment plan from abroad.

Can I do a consultation before I book flights?

You can send photos and any X-rays on WhatsApp for a provisional opinion. The final plan still depends on an in-person exam, so leave some flexibility in your schedule.

What if something goes wrong after I return home?

Contact the clinic with photos and see your local dentist for an exam. Having your records and materials list with you makes it much easier for them to help.

Is it a red flag if a clinic pushes me to decide that day?

The NHS lists pressure to decide quickly as a warning sign. A good plan should still make sense after a night's sleep.

Do Korean dentists explain risks in writing?

Practices vary, so ask for a written treatment plan with options, fees and risks. If anything is unclear, ask before you sign.

Can expats use the same clinic for routine care?

Yes. Lucid offers check-ups, scaling and fillings as well as cosmetic work; NHIS may cover some routine items for enrolled residents.
