Foreign patients often hear two claims about Korean dentistry: that standards are high and that treatment is fast. Both deserve a closer look. Standards come from specific rules and training you can check. Speed comes mostly from scheduling and workflow, because healing time is set by biology, not by the country you are in. This post separates the two.
What standards apply to dentists in Korea?
Every dentist in Korea must hold a national license, earned by passing the dental licensing exam run by the Korea Health Personnel Licensing Examination Institute (KHPLEI). Since 2021 that exam has included a clinical skills test. Specialist titles, such as prosthodontist, require further training beyond the basic license.
A few other rules shape what patients experience:
- Price transparency. The government and the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service publish clinic-level prices for many non-covered items; the 2024 release covered 623 items.
- Advertising limits. Korea's Medical Service Act restricts medical advertising, which is why clinic sites avoid patient reviews and before-and-after claims.
- Foreign patient reporting. In March 2026 the Ministry of Health and Welfare proposed that institutions report the charges they bill foreign patients and any broker commissions.
Our guide to how Korean dentists are trained and licensed covers the education path in more detail.
How can I check a clinic's standards for myself?
- Ask who will treat you and what their training is in your specific treatment.
- Ask for a written treatment plan with options, risks and per-item fees.
- Ask which materials and brands are used, such as the implant system or veneer type.
- Check whether X-rays or a scan are taken before any irreversible step.
- Ask how follow-up works after you fly home, and whether you can get your records.
The UK General Dental Council gives similar advice to anyone going abroad: check whether the country regulates dentists, ask about qualifications and aftercare, and talk to your own dentist first.
At Lucid Dental Clinic, the lead dentist is Dr. Park Hyun-min, a dentist certified in esthetic dentistry (심미치과 인정의) with a DDS from Kyung Hee University and continuing education in implants and endodontics. You can see how plans are put together in how we plan your treatment.
Is dental treatment in Korea really faster?
Some parts can be quicker to schedule, but healing is not faster anywhere. Cleveland Clinic notes that the jawbone can take three to nine months to fuse with an implant, and that applies in Seoul as much as in Sydney or Seattle. What a clinic can change is how quickly you get appointments and how many steps can safely be combined.
At Lucid, a few things help visitors use their time well: late opening until 20:30 Tuesday to Thursday, Saturday hours from 10:00 to 16:00, and options such as One-Day LUCINATE veneers and one-day implants for suitable cases. Suitability is decided after an exam.
What timelines are realistic for common treatments?
These are general patterns, not promises for any one person.
| Treatment | Typical pattern | What sets the pace |
|---|---|---|
| Resin filling | Usually one visit | Size and depth of decay |
| Inlay | Often two visits | How the inlay is made |
| Porcelain veneers (lab-made) | At least two visits with lab time between | Lab work, shade and fit checks |
| One-Day LUCINATE | Same-day for suitable cases | Tooth condition and bite |
| Implant with crown | Often two trips | Bone healing, three to nine months |
| Root canal | One or more visits, often followed by a crown | Infection and canal anatomy |
| Invisalign | Many months of aligners with check-ins | Tooth movement |
For implant scheduling across two trips, see the dental implant timeline in Korea. Individual results vary; a consultation and exam are required.
What if I can only make one trip?
Say so at the start. Some treatments fit well into one stay, such as fillings, inlays, a cleaning or veneers that suit a same-day or short lab schedule. Others, like most implants with a final crown, usually need a return visit or a dentist at home who can finish the work. Knowing your limit early lets the dentist suggest a plan that can actually be completed, or a staged plan with a clear stopping point, instead of one that leaves you half-treated at the airport.
When does rushing become a risk?
When it skips diagnosis or healing. Placing a crown before an implant has bonded, bonding veneers over untreated decay, or squeezing every step into one long day to meet a flight can all cause problems later. A clinic should be willing to tell you that part of your plan needs a second trip. If you are planning around a fixed date, start with an exam and build the schedule from there.

Frequently asked questions
Are Korean dental materials the same as those used abroad?
Many materials and implant systems used in Korea are also sold internationally, including Korean brands such as Osstem and MegaGen. Ask for the exact product names in writing so your home dentist can work with them.
Can a Korean dentist's work be maintained by my dentist at home?
Usually, yes, if they have your records and know the materials and implant system. Ask for copies of X-rays and a written summary before you leave.
Is same-day treatment lower quality than multi-visit treatment?
Not inherently, but it suits fewer cases. The deciding factor is whether your teeth, gums and bite are right for it, which is assessed at the exam.
How do I know if my plan is being rushed?
Be cautious if a plan skips X-rays, ignores healing time or pressures you to decide on the spot. A good plan explains why each step is scheduled when it is.
Do Korean dentists speak English?
Many clinics serving foreigners offer English. At Lucid, consultations are available in English, Japanese and Chinese.
