Is teeth scaling really free in Korea?
Not quite free, but close. The annual insured scaling is covered by the National Health Insurance Service, and you pay a 30% co-payment. Korea's government policy briefing estimated that share at about ₩13,000 in 2021, and the NHIS webzine cited around ₩15,000 in 2022. Fees are set nationally and adjusted over time, so expect a similar small amount today and confirm at reception.
Many expats hear it described as "free scaling," so it's worth knowing the real cost before you go. It's still one of the most useful NHIS benefits: a professional cleaning for roughly the price of a lunch in Gangnam.

The "scaling alone" condition matters. The policy briefing explains that the annual benefit applies when the cleaning completes your treatment. If the dentist finds gum disease that needs further care, that treatment is assessed separately under different rules. Under-19s are generally not eligible for the annual preventive scaling, although NHIS notes that scaling as a step before gum surgery can be covered for them.
How do I use my annual scaling at Lucid Dental?

- Check this year's benefit is unused. If you had a cleaning at another clinic this calendar year, the second will be non-covered. Ask us when you book if you're unsure.
- Book on WhatsApp. Give your name exactly as it appears on your residence card.
- Bring your residence card (ARC). Reception confirms your eligibility at check-in.
- Exam, then scaling. The dentist checks your gums, then tartar above the gumline is removed with an ultrasonic scaler.
- Pay the co-pay at reception. You don't file anything with NHIS yourself.

What does the insured scaling include, and what doesn't it?
The covered service is the removal of tartar and plaque from tooth surfaces above the gumline. NHIS describes it as using ultrasonic instruments to remove calculus attached to the tooth surface above the gums. It does not include:
- Deep cleaning below the gums (root planing) for gum disease, which is assessed as separate treatment
- Whitening or cosmetic stain removal beyond routine cleaning
- Fillings or other treatment for problems found during the visit
If the dentist spots a cavity or a gum pocket, they'll explain what they see and what it would cost to treat, then you decide. Nothing extra is done without your agreement.
Why is a yearly cleaning worth doing?
Tartar can't be removed by brushing once it hardens, and it gives bacteria a rough surface to cling to near the gums. Regular professional removal, combined with good brushing and flossing, helps keep gums healthy and lets the dentist catch small problems early, when they are usually simpler and less costly to fix.
When is the smartest time to book?
Any time in the calendar year works, but a few timing tips help. If you haven't used your benefit by autumn, book before December so it isn't lost. What if I need more than one cleaning a year?
People with braces, implants, heavy tartar build-up or a history of gum disease may benefit from cleanings more often than once a year. The extra visits are non-covered unless they're part of diagnosed gum treatment. The dentist will explain which category applies and the fee before treatment. What if I'm a visitor without NHIS?

Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming it's a July-to-June year. The current benefit follows the calendar year.
- Forgetting a cleaning at another clinic. The once-a-year limit applies across all clinics.
- Waiting until late December. Clinics can be busy at year-end.
- Skipping the exam. Scaling removes tartar but doesn't replace a check for cavities or gum disease.
