Can English teachers in Korea use national health insurance at the dentist?
Yes. If you are employed at a workplace covered by Korea's National Health Insurance, NHIS says enrollment is compulsory, and the monthly contribution is split 50/50 between you and your employer. Once enrolled, you pay the NHIS copay for covered dental care, just like Korean coworkers.
That applies whether you teach at a public school, a university or a private academy (hagwon), as long as the employer has enrolled you. Check your pay slip for a health insurance deduction, or ask your school's admin staff for your enrollment date. What does NHIS usually cover for teachers at a dental clinic?
Everyday, medically necessary dental care is typically covered; cosmetic work is not. At clinic-level providers such as Lucid Dental Clinic, NHIS lists the outpatient copay as 30% of the covered cost.

- Bring your Alien Registration Card (Residence Card). The clinic uses it to check your NHIS eligibility.
- Arrive 10 minutes early for your first visit. You will fill in a short medical history.
- Get an exam and a clear plan. The dentist explains what is covered by NHIS and what is not, with fees, before starting.
- Book follow-ups around your teaching timetable. Larger work can often be grouped into fewer, longer appointments.

Should I fix my teeth before my contract ends?
If you are finishing a contract, it is worth booking an exam at least a few weeks before your last day. That gives time for any fillings or a crown, which can need more than one visit, while you are still enrolled in NHIS.

Tips from the front desk for teachers
- Mention any morning headaches, jaw soreness or worn-looking teeth at your exam. These can be signs of clenching or grinding, which a custom night guard may help protect against.
- Ask for your cleaning in a month when your timetable is lighter, such as exam weeks or just after the school year starts, so you are not squeezing it in between classes.
- If a tooth is sensitive to cold coffee between classes, get it checked early. Small problems are usually simpler to treat.

Do I need to be enrolled in NHIS to see a dentist in Korea?
No. You can see a dentist and pay privately. Enrollment only changes what you pay for covered care, so bring your Residence Card if you are enrolled.
My school has not enrolled me in NHIS yet. What should I do?

Can I get my teeth whitened on NHIS?
