NHIS Teeth Cleaning in Korea

In Korea, the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) covers scaling (teeth cleaning) once a year for insured adults. This makes routine dental care very affordable compared to other countries.
Here’s how it works:
✔ Who is eligible?
- Anyone enrolled in NHIS
- Korean citizens
- Foreign residents with NHIS coverage (ARC holders)
✔ How often is scaling covered?
Once per calendar year (1 time annually)
If you need more than one cleaning in the same year, the second cleaning is charged at the full private price.
✔ What is the cost?
With NHIS coverage:
₩10,000–₩20,000 KRW (approx.)
Prices vary slightly depending on the clinic.
Without insurance:
₩50,000–₩100,000 KRW depending on clinic location.
✔ What’s included in NHIS-covered scaling?
NHIS covers basic scaling only:
- Plaque removal
- Tartar removal
- Basic polishing
It does not include:
- Deep cleaning (periodontal treatment)
- Advanced stain removal
- Teeth whitening
- Gum treatment unless medically necessary
✔ What if gum disease is found?
If the dentist diagnoses gingivitis or periodontitis, NHIS may cover some additional periodontal treatment.
Coverage varies depending on severity.
✔ Do you need an exam first?
Yes.
NHIS requires:
- A dental exam
- Gum check
- Diagnosis before scaling
This is usually included in the visit.
