Clear Aligners If You're Only in Korea Short Term: What's Realistic
On a short trip of one or two weeks, starting clear aligners in Korea is usually not practical: aligners typically take 4–6 weeks to make and need months of supervised check-ups. Can I start clear aligners on a short trip to Korea?
Usually not in a way we can responsibly supervise. Clear aligners are custom-made after a 3D scan, and the American Association of Orthodontists notes that production and shipping typically take 4–6 weeks. Treatment then continues for months with regular check-ups. A one- or two-week visit is too short to start and monitor a full aligner course from Seoul.
That does not mean you have no options. What makes sense depends on how long you are in Korea, what you want to change, and whether you have a dentist at home who can take over.

Why can't aligners just be mailed to me after I leave?
Aligners are prescription devices. The US FDA states they require oversight by a licensed dentist or orthodontist and warns that unsupervised treatment can lead to bite problems, unintended tooth movement, and damage to existing crowns or implants. The AAO also recommends regular check-ups throughout treatment.
Without check-ups, nobody is watching whether teeth are moving as planned, whether gums are healthy, or whether a new cavity is forming under the plastic. For this reason, Lucid Dental does not start aligner treatment for people who cannot attend follow-up visits or arrange appropriate supervision.
What can be done if I'm only here for a week or two?
If your main goal is how your front teeth look, some changes can be made within a short stay, depending on your teeth:
- Composite bonding: tooth-colored resin reshapes small chips, gaps or uneven edges, often in a single visit.

- Whitening: can brighten teeth and sometimes makes minor irregularities less noticeable.
Be aware of the trade-off. These options change the shape or surface of teeth; they do not correct the bite, and veneers usually involve removing some enamel, which is permanent. If your bite, jaw or significant crowding is the issue, true orthodontic treatment is the better-matched approach, even if it has to wait until you are home.
How do I plan if I'm staying for a few months?
- Send photos and dates first: use an online consultation to share smile photos and your exact arrival and departure dates.
- Exam early in your stay: the scan and records should happen as soon as possible after you arrive, because manufacturing time eats into your stay.
- Treat problems first: cavities and gum problems are managed before tooth movement starts.
- Agree the scope: a limited plan targeting the front teeth may fit a shorter window; a full correction may not.
- Plan retention before you leave: you should leave with retainers and clear instructions, as teeth can shift back without them.

What if I live in Korea but travel a lot?
For residents, full aligner treatment is often practical. Aligners are removable, which suits business travel and holidays. Tell us your travel calendar so check-ups can be scheduled around it, and carry your current, previous and next aligners when you travel in case one is lost. Is it worth waiting until I can commit to full treatment?
For many people, yes. Mild crowding rarely becomes urgent, and starting tooth movement you cannot finish can leave teeth partly moved and harder to correct later. Using your trip for a thorough exam, cleaning, and a written assessment in English can still be valuable: you leave knowing what is needed and can compare it with advice at home. If you decide to return for a longer stay, your records will already be on file.

You will learn whether your concern is cosmetic or bite-related, which options fit your dates, estimated fees from the clinic's reference table, and what follow-up you would need at home. Frequently asked questions
Can I get scanned in Seoul and start aligners at home?
You can ask for copies of your records to share with a dentist at home, but the treatment should be planned and supervised by the dentist who will see you during treatment. Starting with one provider and finishing with another needs to be agreed in advance.
Are mail-order aligners a good alternative?
The FDA and AAO both highlight risks when aligner treatment is not supervised by a dentist in person, including bite problems and damage to existing dental work. An in-person exam before any tooth movement is strongly advised.
I am an English teacher on a one-year contract. Is that long enough?
Often, yes, for mild to moderate cases if you start early in your contract. Share your contract end date at the first visit so the plan and retention can be completed before you leave.
Can veneers replace braces completely?
Veneers can improve the appearance of mildly crooked teeth, but they do not move roots or correct the bite. For moderate to severe crowding or bite problems, orthodontics is generally recommended.
