How does Invisalign treatment work?
- Consultation and exam: we check your teeth, gums, bite and any existing crowns or implants. Cavities or gum problems are treated first.
- Digital scan and records: photos and X-rays are taken, and a 3D scan of your teeth is sent to Align Technology.
- Treatment plan review: you see a digital preview of the planned tooth movements and discuss it before approving.
- Aligners are made: the American Association of Orthodontists notes production and shipping typically take 4–6 weeks from the scan.
- Fitting visit: small tooth-colored attachments may be bonded to some teeth to help the aligners grip, and you receive your first sets.
- Wear and switch: you move to the next aligner on the schedule your dentist gives you, with regular check-ups.
- Refinement if needed: additional aligners may be ordered to fine-tune results.
- Retention: retainers keep your teeth from shifting back.
How many hours a day do I need to wear aligners?
Invisalign states that aligners must be worn 20 to 22 hours a day ( Invisalign). The AAO describes wearing each aligner for about a week at a time, at least 22 hours a day, and the US FDA says at least 20 hours a day or as directed. You take them out only to eat, drink anything other than water, and clean your teeth.
In Seoul, where meals are often shared and long, this takes some planning. Many people carry a case, a travel toothbrush and a small bottle of water so they can put aligners back quickly after eating.
How long does Invisalign take?
Invisalign says simple cases can be completed in as little as 6 months, but treatment time depends on complexity and must be set by your doctor. Many adult cases take longer. Your plan will give an estimated duration and number of check-ups.
What if I move away from Korea before treatment ends?
This is a common concern for English teachers, students and people on work contracts. Before you start, tell us:
- Your expected departure date and where you will move
- How often you can return to Seoul, if at all
- Whether you would prefer a shorter, limited plan that finishes before you leave
Continuing treatment with another Invisalign provider abroad may be possible, but it is not automatic, and the new provider may charge its own fees. If your stay is short, read clear aligners if you are only in Korea short term before deciding.
Do I need a retainer after Invisalign?
Yes. Teeth tend to drift back toward their old positions after any orthodontic treatment, so retainers are an essential final step rather than an optional extra. Is Invisalign covered by Korean health insurance?

Can I start Invisalign in Seoul and finish it in my home country?
It may be possible to transfer care to another Invisalign provider, but this is not automatic and the new provider may charge separately. Discuss your plans before starting so your treatment can be designed around them.
Can I drink coffee with aligners in?
It is generally advised to remove aligners for anything other than plain water, because hot drinks can warp them and sugary or colored drinks can stain them and sit against your teeth. Rinse or brush before putting them back.
Do Invisalign attachments show?
Attachments are small bumps made of tooth-colored material, so they are usually subtle. They are polished off when treatment ends.
Will aligners affect my speech when teaching or presenting?
Some people have a slight lisp for the first few days while the tongue adapts. This usually settles quickly with regular wear.
How often do I need check-ups?
