Veneers vs Crowns: Which One Do You Need?

A veneer is a thin shell bonded to the front of a tooth to improve its look, while a crown is a cap that covers the whole tooth to protect and strengthen it. Veneers suit healthy teeth with cosmetic issues; crowns suit weak, broken, or root-canal-treated teeth. Lucid Dental Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul offers both.

Key facts

  • Veneers cover the front surface of a tooth; crowns cover the entire visible tooth.
  • The ADA lists crown uses including protecting weak teeth, restoring broken teeth, covering large fillings, and covering implants.
  • Cleveland Clinic says crowns typically last 5 to 15 years with proper care, and lab-made crowns usually take two to three weeks.
  • A 2012 meta-analysis estimated 95.7% five-year survival for feldspathic porcelain veneers.

Veneers and crowns can both give you a natural-looking, tooth-colored result, so they are easy to confuse. The difference is how much of the tooth they cover and why they are used. Choosing the right one depends on the health and strength of the tooth underneath.

What is the difference between a veneer and a crown?

A veneer is a thin covering bonded to the front of a tooth. A crown is a cap that covers the whole visible tooth. Veneers mainly change appearance; crowns also protect and strengthen.

Feature Veneer Crown
Coverage Front surface (and edge) Whole visible tooth
Main purpose Cosmetic: color, shape, small gaps Protect, strengthen, and restore
Tooth reshaping Little, some, or sometimes none More, all around the tooth
Typical teeth Front teeth Front or back teeth
Used on implants? No Yes
Lucid reference fee From ₩1,190,000 per tooth (LUCINATE) Zirconia crown on implant ₩500,000; natural-tooth crowns quoted after exam

When do you need a crown instead of a veneer?

You usually need a crown when the tooth itself is weak or damaged. The American Dental Association lists several reasons for crowns.

  • Protecting a weak tooth from breaking, or holding a cracked tooth together.
  • Restoring a broken or badly worn tooth.
  • Covering a tooth with a large filling and little natural tooth left.
  • Holding a dental bridge in place.
  • Covering a dental implant.
  • Covering badly shaped or discolored teeth.

Back teeth treated with a root canal are often crowned to protect them. See our root canal treatment page.

When is a veneer the better choice?

Veneers make sense when the tooth is healthy and strong but you want to change how it looks. Common reasons include staining that whitening cannot fix, chipped or worn edges, small gaps, and slightly uneven teeth.

Because veneers cover less of the tooth, they usually need less reshaping than crowns. In some cases, no-prep or minimal-prep veneers are possible; see no-prep veneers in Korea. The ADA notes that porcelain veneer treatment is not reversible when enamel is removed, and that veneers may not suit people who grind or have a deep overbite.

How long do veneers and crowns last?

Both can last many years with good care. Cleveland Clinic says crowns typically last between 5 and 15 years with proper care, and sometimes much longer. For veneers, a 2012 meta-analysis by Layton, Clarke, and Walton estimated 95.7% survival for feldspathic porcelain veneers at five years.

Your habits matter as much as the material. Grinding, chewing ice or pens, and skipping check-ups shorten the life of both. A night guard (₩600,000 at Lucid) helps if you grind.

How does treatment compare for a trip to Seoul?

Both usually need more than one visit. Cleveland Clinic notes that a lab-made crown often takes two to three weeks in a typical US setting, and that same-day options exist but are not for everyone. At Lucid, your dentist confirms the number of visits and days for veneers or crowns at consultation.

  1. Exam, X-rays, and photos to check the tooth's strength and nerve health.
  2. Decision on veneer or crown for each tooth.
  3. Tooth preparation and a scan or impression.
  4. Fabrication of the veneer or crown.
  5. Try-in, bonding or cementing, and bite adjustment.

Can I have veneers and crowns in the same smile?

Yes, and it is common. For example, one front tooth with a large old filling might need a crown, while its neighbors get veneers. The challenge is making them match, because crowns and veneers let light through differently. A prosthodontist plans the materials and shades together so the smile looks even.

At Lucid, Dr. Park Hyun-min, a certified prosthodontist, plans combined cases. Learn more on the LUCINATE veneers page, the zirconia crowns in Seoul page, and our dental crowns in Seoul service page.

What questions should I ask my dentist?

If you are unsure which option fits, these questions help you understand the recommendation and compare quotes fairly.

  • How much healthy tooth structure is left, and how strong is it?
  • How much of the tooth will be reshaped for each option?
  • Which material do you recommend, and why?
  • How will you match the shade of crowns and veneers side by side?
  • What would happen to this tooth if I chose the other option?
  • How many visits and days will I need in Seoul?

A clear answer to the first question often settles the choice. A strong tooth with a cosmetic problem points toward a veneer; a weakened tooth points toward a crown.

What about composite bonding?

For small chips or gaps, composite bonding can be a more conservative option than either a veneer or a crown. It is quicker and easier to repair but less stain-resistant than porcelain. Frequently asked questions

Is a crown or veneer better for a front tooth?

If the front tooth is healthy and you want a cosmetic change, a veneer is usually more conservative. If it has a large filling, a crack, or a root canal, a crown may protect it better. Your dentist decides after an exam and X-rays.

Do crowns need more tooth removed than veneers?

Generally, yes. A crown covers the whole tooth, so the tooth is reshaped all around, while a veneer covers mainly the front surface.

Can a veneer be replaced with a crown later?

Yes. If a veneered tooth later weakens or breaks, it can often be restored with a crown. Your dentist will check how much healthy tooth remains.

Are crowns covered by Korean health insurance?

Veneers are typically not covered by NHIS. For any crown, ask the clinic and NHIS before treatment, since coverage depends on the tooth, the material, and your enrollment status.

Which looks more natural, a crown or a veneer?

Both can look natural when well designed. Veneers keep more of your natural tooth, which can help with a lifelike look, while crowns can mask heavier damage or discoloration.

How much does a zirconia crown cost at Lucid Dental?

A zirconia crown on a dental implant is ₩500,000. Crowns on natural teeth are quoted after an exam, based on the tooth and material.
