Both are South Korean implant manufacturers with international distribution. Osstem Implant was founded in 1997 and is headquartered in Seoul. MegaGen Implant was established in 2002 and is headquartered in Daegu.

According to the company, Osstem was founded by a dentist, operates more than 34 subsidiaries across 30 countries, and exports to over 100 countries. MegaGen states that its implants are available in more than 100 countries. MegaGen's international sales office, MegaGen Tower, is on Nonhyeon-ro in Gangnam, the same road as Lucid Dental Clinic. For patients who live abroad, wide international availability matters: it makes it more likely that a dentist near your home can source compatible parts for future maintenance.

What is the Osstem SOI surface?

Osstem describes SOI as its sand-blasted, acid-etched (SA) microtexture combined with vacuum-UV photofunctionalization and a pH-buffering agent, creating a "super-hydrophilic" surface that attracts blood, proteins and bone cells.

The manufacturer states that SOI can reduce treatment timeframes from a traditional 6–9 months to as little as 2–4 months. That is Osstem's own claim, not an independent research finding, and healing time for any individual depends on bone density, location, grafting and general health. Your dentist decides when it is safe to place the crown by checking stability, not by the calendar alone.

Does the implant brand matter more than the dentist?

The brand is one factor. Planning, surgical technique, bone quality, the design of the crown and your home care all influence how an implant performs over time.

Research on loading times shows how much depends on the situation in your mouth. A Cochrane review found that a high insertion torque (at least 35 Ncm), meaning how firmly the implant is anchored when placed, appears to be a prerequisite for successful immediate or early loading. That is a matter of bone and technique as much as brand. In practice, a well-planned implant from either company, placed in healthy bone and kept clean, is what patients should look for. Ask any clinic how they choose a fixture for your site, and whether they can show you the plan on your CT scan. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration lists risks for any implant system, including looseness of the implant, nerve injury and loose abutment screws, and advises patients to discuss benefits and risks with their dental provider.

Are Korean implants cleared in the US?

Both companies have US FDA 510(k) clearances on record for implant systems. For example, FDA document K222778 covers the "Osstem Implant System," and MegaGen's company history lists FDA clearances for its Intermezzo (2005) and EZ Plus (2007) implant systems. Clearance status differs by product and model, so if this matters to you, ask us for the specific model and check the FDA database.
