Dental Implant Timeline in Korea: How Many Trips Do You Need?

Most overseas patients need two trips to Korea for a dental implant: about 5–10 days for exam and implant surgery, then commonly 2–6 months of healing at home, then about 5–7 days to fit the final crown. Why do dental implants usually take two trips?

An implant has two phases separated by healing time. First the implant is placed in the jawbone. Then, after the bone has bonded to it, the final crown is attached. That healing gap, commonly a few months, is why most overseas patients visit Seoul twice.

The American Dental Association describes the stages as surgical placement, bone healing around the implant (osseointegration), and attachment of the replacement tooth, noting that some patients wait up to several months before the tooth is attached. Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust in London tells its patients that, in total, implant treatment could take 6 to 12 months when bone grafting and all stages are included. Every mouth is different, so your own timeline is set after a CT scan.

Step by step: the implant process in Korea

  1. Send records before booking flights. Recent X-rays or a CT scan, photos and a short medical history help us estimate whether you need grafting. See how many days you need in Korea.
  2. Day 1 in Seoul: exam and CT. We confirm bone volume, nerve and sinus position, and gum health, and give you a written plan and quote.
  3. Surgery day. The implant is placed under local anesthesia; conscious sedation is available. In suitable cases a temporary tooth may be attached (see same-day implants).
  4. Post-operative check. Usually within the next few days, to check healing and swelling.
  5. Stitch review, then fly home. Stitches are reviewed or removed before you leave, depending on the type used.
  6. Healing at home. Soft diet at first, careful cleaning, and photo updates if anything concerns you.
  7. Trip 2: crown. Implant stability is checked, an impression or digital scan is taken, and the custom abutment and zirconia crown are made and fitted.
  8. Records. Ask for English records including the implant brand and model, which the FDA advises patients to keep. See English dental records.

When might you need three trips, or only one?

Three trips are more likely when significant bone grafting or a sinus lift must heal before the implant can be placed. A single longer stay is possible in some cases, but it is not the norm.

  • Three trips: a large graft or lateral-window sinus lift is done first and allowed to heal, then the implant, then the crown. See bone graft and sinus lift costs.
  • Two trips: the most common plan for a single implant with adequate bone, or with a small graft placed at the same time.
  • Expats in Korea: living here makes the process simpler, as the healing phase and crown visits fit around your normal schedule.

Can implant healing be shortened?

Sometimes, but it should never be rushed. Immediate or early loading can shorten the gap for selected patients. A Cochrane review found no evidence of a difference in first-year failure between immediate and conventional loading in carefully selected cases, while noting that high initial stability (insertion torque of at least 35 Ncm) appears to be needed and that evidence quality was very low.

Implant surface technology also plays a role. Osstem states that its SOI surface can shorten treatment timeframes from a traditional 6–9 months to as little as 2–4 months; that is the manufacturer's claim, and your dentist will judge what is safe for your bone. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes and poor oral hygiene can all slow healing.

What does the full treatment cost?

At Lucid Dental Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, a single implant (fixture + custom abutment + zirconia crown) costs from about ₩1,190,000 to ₩1,490,000 before any grafting, or roughly US$850–1,060 at about ₩1,400 per US dollar (check today's rate). Fixture options are MegaGen AnyOne (₩590,000), Osstem BA (₩690,000) and Osstem SOI (₩890,000); the abutment is ₩100,000 and the zirconia crown ₩500,000. Frequently asked questions

Can I get my implant crown done at home instead of a second trip?

It is sometimes possible, but different implant systems use specific parts, and your local dentist must be able to source compatible components. Ask us to give you the brand, model and size in writing. Discuss this with both dentists before trip 1.

What do I wear in the gap while the implant heals?

For a front tooth, a temporary tooth is usually provided so you are not left with a visible gap. For back teeth, a gap is often left during healing. Options depend on the case.

How soon after surgery can I fly home?

Many patients fly after the post-operative check, a few days after surgery, if healing is on track. Complex cases or sinus lifts may need longer. Your dentist will advise based on the procedure performed.

Do I need a CT scan before traveling?

It is helpful but not required. If you have a recent CT, send it for a more accurate preliminary plan. Any imaging still needed is arranged at your first visit in Seoul.

What if something feels wrong between trips?
