Sensitive Teeth Treatment in Seoul
Sensitive teeth usually mean exposed dentin from worn enamel, gum recession, decay, cracks or worn fillings. At Lucid Dental Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, the dentist first finds the cause, then may suggest desensitizing treatment, bonding, a filling, gum treatment or, for persistent nerve pain, root canal treatment. Resin repairs start from ₩60,000.

Why are my teeth suddenly sensitive?
Sensitivity usually means the inner layer of the tooth, called dentin, has become exposed. The American Dental Association explains that dentin contains microscopic tubules; when enamel or gum no longer covers them, heat, cold, sweet or acidic foods can reach the nerve and trigger a sharp, brief pain.
The ADA lists these common causes:
- Tooth decay(cavities)
- Fractured or cracked teeth
- Worn fillings
- Gum disease or receding gums that expose the root
- Worn enamel, from hard brushing, acidic drinks or grinding
- Exposed tooth roots
Short-term sensitivity is also common after a cleaning, whitening, or a new filling. Travel can make it more noticeable, too: iced drinks, cold air, acidic snacks and night-time clenching after long flights all add up.
Is it sensitivity or something more serious?
The pattern of the pain gives useful clues, but only an exam can confirm the cause.
| What you feel | What it often suggests | How soon to be seen |
|---|---|---|
| Brief, sharp twinge with cold, gone in seconds, several teeth | Exposed dentin, worn enamel or gum recession | Routine appointment |
| Sharp pain when biting down on one tooth | Possible crack or broken filling | Within days |
| Pain with sweets in one spot | Possible cavity | Within a week or two |
| Lingering ache after hot or cold, or throbbing at night | Possible nerve inflammation | Promptly; may need root canal treatment |
| Pain with facial swelling or fever | Possible infection | Same day; call 119 if swelling affects breathing or swallowing |

How is sensitive teeth treatment done at Lucid Dental?
Treatment targets the cause, so the first step is always a proper diagnosis.
- Talk through symptoms. Which teeth, what triggers the pain, and how long it lasts.
- Examine and test. The dentist checks for decay, cracks, gum recession, worn fillings and grinding wear, using X-rays where needed.
- Treat the cause. Options are chosen from those below.
- Protect and prevent. Home-care advice, and a guard if grinding is contributing.
- Review. Sensitivity is rechecked, since some treatments take a few weeks to show full effect.
What treatments are available for sensitive teeth?
The ADA describes these options, from simplest to most involved:
| Treatment | Often used for | Reference fee at Lucid Dental |
|---|---|---|
| Desensitizing toothpaste | Mild, widespread sensitivity | Over the counter |
| In-office fluoride or desensitizing agent | Exposed dentin, recent recession | Confirmed at consultation |
| Bonding or a resin filling over exposed areas | Notches at the gumline, worn spots, small cavities | Resin from ₩60,000–150,000 per tooth |
| Inlay or crown | Cracked teeth, large failing fillings | Inlay from ₩300,000; crowns quoted after exam |
| Gum treatment or gum graft | Gum disease or significant recession | Depends on diagnosis |
| Root canal treatment | Persistent nerve pain not helped by other measures | Quoted after exam |
All prices are reference "from" fees on our official non-covered fee table and are confirmed at consultation. Resin at ₩60,000–150,000 is about US$43–107 at roughly ₩1,400 per US$ (check today's rate). Expats enrolled in Korean national health insurance may have some treatments, such as root canal therapy and certain fillings, covered; ask at reception.
For more on individual treatments, see composite bonding, gum treatment and root canal treatment. Dr. Park Hyun-min has completed continuing education in endodontics at the University of Pennsylvania, which is relevant when sensitivity turns out to involve the tooth nerve.
How long does treatment take?
It depends on the cause. A desensitizing application or a small bonding repair can often be done in a single visit, which helps if you're only in Seoul for a few days. An inlay or crown usually needs more than one appointment. Gum treatment may be spread over several visits, and root canal treatment typically takes two or more sessions. When you book, tell us how long you'll be in Korea. The dentist can then prioritize the tooth causing the most trouble, place a protective temporary where needed, and give you English notes and X-rays for your dentist at home. Evening appointments until 20:30 on Tuesday to Thursday can help if you're working in Seoul.
Can whitening or cleaning make sensitivity worse?
Both can cause temporary sensitivity. Whitening gels can briefly irritate the nerve, and removing tartar can expose root surfaces that were previously covered. This usually eases within days to a few weeks. If you already have sensitive teeth, tell the dentist before whitening so the plan can be adjusted. What can I do at home right now?
- Switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush and use gentle, short strokes.
- Use a desensitizing toothpaste twice daily, and give it a few weeks to work. Spreading a little on the sensitive area before bed may help.
- Rinse with water after acidic drinks like soda, citrus or wine, and wait before brushing.
- Avoid very cold drinks while the area settles.
- If you grind, ask about a night guard.
The ADA stresses that good daily oral hygiene is the key to preventing sensitive-tooth pain. If home care hasn't helped within a few weeks, or the pain is concentrated in one tooth, book an exam. Our international patients hub explains booking and payment for visitors.

Frequently asked questions
Can sensitive teeth go away on their own?
Mild sensitivity sometimes improves with gentler brushing and desensitizing toothpaste. Sensitivity caused by decay, a crack or a worn filling won't heal by itself and needs treatment.
Why is only one tooth sensitive?
Sensitivity in a single tooth is more likely to be a local problem such as a cavity, a crack, a leaking filling or gum recession on that tooth. It's worth having it examined rather than waiting.
Can I buy desensitizing toothpaste in Korea?
Yes. Pharmacies, supermarkets and convenience stores in Korea typically stock toothpaste for sensitive teeth. Look for the word 시린이 (sirini), which refers to sensitive teeth, on the packaging.
Is tooth sensitivity a sign I need a root canal?
Usually not. Most sensitivity is treated with simpler measures. A root canal is considered when pain lingers, wakes you at night, or tests show the nerve is inflamed or infected.
Does gum recession cause sensitivity?
Yes. When gums recede, the root surface is exposed, and it has no enamel covering. Treating gum disease and protecting the exposed root can reduce sensitivity.
