Do I actually need my wisdom teeth out?
Not always. The NHS notes that wisdom teeth are usually removed only when they cause problems, such as pain, repeated gum infection, decay, or a cyst. Healthy, fully erupted wisdom teeth that you can clean may simply be monitored.
A routine dental exam with an X-ray is the usual way to find out. Many people discover a problem wisdom tooth only when the gum around it becomes sore during a trip, often after long flights, late nights or a change in diet. If the gum is inflamed but the tooth itself is healthy, the dentist may first clean the area and treat the infection, then discuss whether removal makes sense later. Common reasons a dentist may recommend removal include:
- Pericoronitis: repeated infection of the gum flap over a partly erupted tooth, causing swelling and a bad taste.
- Decay in the wisdom tooth or in the molar in front of it, because food gets trapped.
- Impaction at an angle that is damaging the neighboring tooth.
- Cysts or other changes seen on an X-ray.
- Orthodontic or prosthetic planning, in some cases.
What happens during a wisdom tooth extraction at Lucid Dental?
Most wisdom teeth are removed under local anesthesia in a single appointment. The NHS describes the removal itself as usually taking a few minutes and generally no more than about 40 minutes, depending on difficulty.
- Consultation and imaging. The dentist examines the area and takes X-rays to see the root shape and how close the tooth sits to the nerve and, for upper teeth, the sinus.
- Explanation and consent. You'll hear, in English, the plan, the risks, the expected recovery and the cost before anything starts.
- Numbing. Local anesthetic is given. If you're anxious, ask about conscious sedation, which Lucid Dental lists among its services.
- Removal. The gum may be opened and the tooth removed whole or in sections to protect the surrounding bone.
- Closing. Stitches are placed if needed, and you bite on gauze to control bleeding.
- Aftercare instructions and a follow-up plan, including a check or stitch removal if required.
How long is recovery after wisdom tooth removal?
Most people return to normal activities within a day or a few days, but some soreness, swelling and jaw stiffness can last up to about two weeks, according to NHS guidance. Lower, deeply impacted teeth tend to take longer than upper ones.

What should I avoid after the extraction?
Avoid smoking, alcohol, very hot drinks, and hard or sticky foods while the socket heals. The NHS also advises not driving for 24–48 hours if you've had a general anesthetic or sedation. Smoking and vigorous rinsing raise the risk of dry socket, where the blood clot is lost and pain increases a few days after surgery. It's possible, but plan time around it. We generally suggest allowing several days in Seoul after the extraction so the dentist can check healing before you leave, especially for lower impacted teeth. How much does wisdom tooth extraction cost in Korea?
Extraction is not on Lucid Dental's published non-covered fee table because the fee depends on difficulty and on your insurance status. The cost is explained at consultation, after the X-ray, before treatment begins.
- Expats enrolled in Korean national health insurance (NHIS): extractions are typically a covered service, so you pay a co-payment. Confirm details at reception. See NHIS dental coverage for foreigners.
- Visitors without Korean insurance: you pay the full clinic fee. Ask for an itemized receipt, and whether an English version is available, to submit to a travel or home insurer.

What are the risks?
Like any surgery, extraction carries risks. The NHS lists dry socket, infection that may need antibiotics, and, less often, nerve irritation causing temporary tingling or numbness of the lip, chin or tongue. For upper teeth, a small opening into the sinus can occasionally occur. Your X-ray helps the dentist judge these risks for your specific tooth, and they will be explained before you decide.
When should I call for help after surgery?
Contact us on WhatsApp if bleeding doesn't slow after firm pressure on gauze for about 10 minutes, pain worsens after day three, or you develop a fever or bad taste. Frequently asked questions
Can all four wisdom teeth be removed at once?
Sometimes, depending on how difficult each tooth is and your general health. Many dentists prefer one side at a time so you can still chew on the other. The dentist will suggest a plan after looking at your X-ray.
Will I be awake during the extraction?
With local anesthesia you are awake but the area is numb, so you feel pressure rather than sharp pain. If you'd prefer to feel more relaxed, ask about conscious sedation at your consultation.
How soon can I eat after wisdom tooth surgery?
You can usually have cool, soft foods once the numbness wears off, taking care not to bite your lip or cheek. Avoid hard, crunchy, spicy and very hot foods for several days.
Can I exercise after a wisdom tooth extraction?
Rest for the first day or two, because heavy exercise can raise blood pressure and restart bleeding. Light walking is usually fine. Ask the dentist when to return to intense workouts based on your procedure.
Do I need antibiotics after removal?
Not always. Antibiotics are prescribed when the dentist judges there's an infection or a higher risk of one. Take any prescription exactly as directed and tell the dentist about allergies.
