What to Eat in Seoul After Dental Treatment

In Seoul, the easiest foods after dental treatment are soft, lukewarm Korean dishes: juk (rice porridge), gyeran-jjim (steamed egg), soft tofu, and mild soups. Avoid spicy, very hot, hard or chewy food at first, and skip strongly colored sauces after whitening. Lucid Dental Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul gives written diet advice after each procedure.

Key facts

  • Juk (죽), Korean rice porridge, is widely sold in Seoul and is a common soft meal after dental surgery.

  • An NHS aftercare leaflet advises not eating or drinking for three hours after a tooth extraction and choosing soft foods afterward.
  • Avoid drinking through a straw after an extraction or implant surgery, as suction may disturb the healing clot.

What are the easiest Korean foods to eat after dental work?

Rice porridge, steamed egg, soft tofu and mild soups are the classic choices. Korea has a long tradition of soft comfort food, which makes Seoul an easy city to recover in.

Here are the dishes our international patients most often find useful. Let hot dishes cool to lukewarm before eating, especially while your mouth is still numb, because you may not feel a burn.

Dish Korean What it is When it suits
Juk 죽 Rice porridge; plain, pumpkin (hobak-juk), abalone (jeonbok-juk) or vegetable First 1 to 3 days after extraction or implant surgery
Gyeran-jjim 계란찜 Soft, fluffy steamed egg, often served as a side at Korean restaurants Any time after numbness wears off
Sundubu 순두부 Silken tofu; order the stew mild (ask for "an maepge", not spicy) After the first day; let it cool
Miyeok-guk 미역국 Mild seaweed soup, traditionally eaten for recovery After the first day; lukewarm
Yogurt, pudding, soft bread 요거트, 푸딩 Easy to find in any convenience store Snacks at any stage
Bingsu 빙수 Shaved ice dessert; choose milk or fruit, skip hard toppings like nuts or rice cakes Cool treat after surgery once bleeding has stopped

What should you avoid eating after dental treatment?

For the first few days, avoid food that is spicy, very hot, hard, crunchy, chewy or full of small seeds. These can irritate or get stuck in a surgical site, or put stress on new restorations.

  • Spicy dishes: tteokbokki, buldak, spicy jjigae and anything heavy with gochujang or gochugaru.
  • Chewy and hard foods: rice cakes (tteok), dried squid, nuts, hard candy, crusty bread.
  • Tough grilled meats: Korean barbecue is a highlight of any Seoul trip, but galbi and samgyeopsal need firm chewing. Save them for a few days later.
  • Straws: after extractions or implant surgery, suction can dislodge the healing clot.
  • Alcohol: soju and beer can slow healing and interact with medicine. NHS guidance on extractions advises avoiding alcohol for at least 24 to 48 hours.

What is a good eating plan for the first day after surgery?

Wait until the numbness wears off, then start with cool, soft food and build up slowly. The Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust leaflet on extractions advises not eating or drinking for three hours afterward, then choosing soft foods and chewing on the other side.

  1. Before your appointment: eat a normal meal, since you may not feel like eating for a few hours afterward.
  2. First few hours: no food or hot drinks while numb; sip water carefully.
  3. Evening of day one: lukewarm juk, yogurt or gyeran-jjim, chewing on the untreated side.
  4. Days two and three: add soft tofu, mild soups, soft noodles cut short, and steamed fish.
  5. From about day four: return gradually to normal food as comfort allows, unless your dentist advised otherwise.

What should you eat after teeth whitening or new veneers?

After whitening, avoid strongly colored food and drinks for the first day or two, since teeth can pick up stains more easily. In Seoul that means going easy on coffee, black tea, red wine, soy sauce, kimchi and red pepper paste for a short while.

Good choices are white or pale foods: plain rice, juk, chicken, tofu, milk-based drinks and white fish. Learn more about tooth whitening at Lucid or compare whitening costs in Seoul.

With new porcelain veneers, you can eat normally once the anesthetic wears off, but avoid biting straight into very hard foods with your front teeth. Cut apples, crusty bread and grilled meat into small pieces. Our veneers aftercare guide has more tips.

What should you drink while you recover?

Water is the simplest choice, and roasted barley tea (boricha, 보리차) is a gentle Korean alternative that many restaurants serve for free. Let it cool if it arrives hot.

Korean convenience-store favorites such as banana milk and sikhye (a sweet rice drink) are fine in moderation once any surgical site has settled, but pour them into a cup instead of using the straw. Sugary drinks feed the bacteria that cause decay, so rinse with water afterward and keep brushing gently as instructed. Sports drinks can help if you are not eating much, but they are acidic, so do not sip them all day. Long flights and Seoul's dry winter air are both dehydrating, which is one more reason to keep a water bottle handy.

How do you find soft food near Lucid Dental Clinic?

Easily. The clinic sits in front of Exit 3 of Eonju Station on Line 9, a busy office area with many restaurants, cafes and convenience stores within a short walk.

  • Convenience stores such as GS25, CU and 7-Eleven stock yogurt, puddings, soft tofu, bananas and ready-made porridge cups.
  • Porridge restaurants are common across Seoul; look for 죽 on the sign.
  • Delivery apps are widely used in Seoul, and some hotels can help you order.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drink coffee after dental treatment in Seoul?

After fillings or veneers, usually yes once numbness wears off. After extractions or implant surgery, wait until the next day and let it cool, and after whitening, avoid coffee for a day or two to limit staining.

Is kimchi OK after a tooth extraction?

It is wiser to skip kimchi for the first few days, because its spice and acidity can sting the wound and small pieces of cabbage can get caught. Reintroduce it once the area feels comfortable.

Is cold food good after dental surgery?

Cool, soft foods such as yogurt or plain bingsu can feel soothing after extractions. Eat them slowly with a spoon, not through a straw.

How do I say 'not spicy' in Korean?

Say 'an maepge juseyo' (안 맵게 주세요), which means 'please make it not spicy'. Many restaurants in Gangnam will adjust a dish on request, though some sauces are premade.

Can I eat Korean barbecue during my dental trip?

Yes, but time it well. Enjoy it before surgical appointments or several days after, once chewing feels comfortable, and cut meat into small pieces if you have new veneers.
