Replacing Old Veneers in Seoul: What to Expect
Old veneers are usually replaced because of chips, cracks, debonding, decay underneath, gum recession or an outdated look. Why do people replace old veneers?
People replace veneers because of damage (chips, cracks, debonding), because of health problems underneath (decay or gum recession), or because they no longer like the look (color, shape, or a mismatch with natural teeth).
The American Dental Association notes that veneers may chip, crack, wear down or loosen over time, requiring the dentist to re-bond, repair or replace them. Research on porcelain laminate veneers finds fracture is the most common complication, followed by debonding. Other common reasons we see in patients who come to Lucid Dental Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, include:
- A gray or dark line at the gumline, often from gum recession exposing the edge.
- Veneers that look bulky, too white or too opaque compared with current preferences.
- Stained composite veneers that have lost their shine.
- Natural teeth next to the veneers that have been whitened or have darkened, so the colors no longer match.
- Sensitivity or pain that may point to decay or a problem with the tooth underneath.
Do all old veneers need replacing?
No. A small chip can sometimes be polished or patched, and an intact veneer that has come off can sometimes be re-bonded. Replacement makes sense when the veneer is cracked through, leaking, decayed underneath, or when you want a different look. A conservative repair can be a sensible way to buy time, and we will tell you when that is a reasonable option.

What happens when old veneers are removed?
The old veneer is carefully cut away, and the dentist then sees the tooth underneath for the first time in years. Only then can the final plan be confirmed.
If the tooth is healthy with enough enamel, a new veneer is usually possible. If there is decay, it is treated first, and if much tooth structure is missing, a crown may give better support. Removing a veneer takes away a thin layer of the underlying tooth as well, so replacements should be planned with care rather than done often.
How does veneer replacement work at Lucid Dental?

- Exam in Seoul. New X-rays, a gum check and bite analysis, plus a look at signs of grinding.
- Design. We discuss shade, shape and translucency. A digital preview or mock-up can help you compare with your old veneers.
- Removal and preparation. Old veneers are removed, decay is treated if found, and the teeth are prepared for the new veneers.
- Temporaries or one-day option. Depending on the case, you may wear temporaries while porcelain is made, or a One-Day LUCINATE option may be discussed.
- Bonding and check. New veneers are bonded, the bite is adjusted, and a night guard is discussed if you grind.

How much does veneer replacement cost in Seoul?
New LUCINATE veneers start from ₩1,190,000 per tooth (Classic), ₩1,390,000 (Premier) or ₩1,990,000 (THE LUCINATE). Additional treatment found after removal, such as resin fillings (₩60,000–150,000 per tooth on our fee table), root canal treatment or a crown, is quoted separately.
At roughly ₩1,400 per US dollar, a Classic veneer is about US$850; check today's rate. How can I make my new veneers last longer?
Think about why the old ones failed. If they chipped, grinding may be the cause and a night guard (from ₩600,000) may help. If the edges darkened, gum health and cleaning at the gumline matter. If they looked unnatural, spend time on the design stage. Research is encouraging: a 2021 systematic review estimated a 95.5% 10-year survival rate for porcelain laminate veneers. Frequently asked questions
Can you replace just one veneer?
Yes, a single veneer can be replaced. The challenge is matching the color and texture of the neighbors, especially if they are older. Your dentist will show shade options and may discuss replacing a set if matching is difficult.
Does removing old veneers damage my teeth?
Removal is done carefully, but a thin layer of tooth may be affected when the old bonding is cleared. This is one reason replacements should not be done more often than needed.
Can composite veneers be replaced with porcelain?
Yes. Composite is usually removed and the teeth are assessed and prepared for porcelain. Because composite often involves little enamel removal, many teeth are still suitable for porcelain afterward.
My veneer fell off while traveling. What should I do?
Keep the veneer in a clean container, avoid chewing on that tooth, and see a dentist. Do not glue it back yourself with household adhesives. An intact veneer can sometimes be re-bonded if the tooth is healthy.
Do I need records from my previous dentist?
They are helpful but not required. Old X-rays, material details and the date of placement can support planning, and we take new X-rays at the exam in any case.
