Veneers Aftercare: What to Avoid and How to Protect Your Veneers

After veneers, avoid biting hard foods like ice, bones and hard candy with your front teeth, skip sticky foods at first, and never use teeth as tools. Brush twice daily, clean between teeth, and wear a night guard if you grind. Lucid Dental Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, gives each patient written aftercare instructions.

Key facts

What should I avoid right after getting veneers?

In the first few days, avoid very hard, very sticky and very hot or cold foods, and do not bite into hard food with your front teeth. Your gums may be a little tender and your teeth slightly sensitive while everything settles.

Some temperature sensitivity is common for a short time after preparation and bonding. Your bite may also feel different because the shape of the teeth has changed. If one spot feels "high" when you close, tell your dentist so it can be adjusted; an uneven bite puts extra stress on porcelain.

Your lips and tongue also need a few days to get used to the new shape, so speech may feel slightly different at first. This usually passes quickly as you adapt.

Which foods and habits can damage veneers?

Hard, brittle things are the main risk to porcelain, and sticky foods can pull on newly bonded restorations. The American Dental Association specifically advises avoiding nail-biting and chewing hard objects.

  • Hard foods: ice cubes, hard candy, nut shells, popcorn kernels, bones.
  • Korean foods to eat carefully: crab shells in ganjang gejang, bones in fried chicken or galbi, dried squid, hard rice crackers and scorched-rice candy. Pull meat off the bone with your fingers or a fork rather than your front teeth.
  • Front-tooth biting: cut apples, carrots, crusty bread and ribs into pieces and chew with your back teeth.
  • Habits: opening bottles or packages with your teeth, chewing pens, biting nails.
  • Grinding and clenching: often happens during sleep, so many people do not know they do it.

Do veneers stain from coffee, tea or wine?

Glazed porcelain resists staining well, but the thin bonding line at the edges and your natural teeth can still pick up color. Composite veneers stain more easily.

The ADA suggests limiting staining foods and drinks such as coffee, tea and red wine. You do not have to give them up. Rinsing with water afterward and keeping up with regular professional cleanings helps. Remember that whitening gels do not change the color of veneers, so if your natural teeth darken over the years, the veneers will not follow. See veneers vs whitening for more on shade matching.

How should I clean my veneers every day?

  1. Brush twice a day with a soft-bristled brush and fluoride toothpaste, angling toward the gumline where plaque collects.
  2. Clean between teeth once a day with floss or interdental brushes. The ADA notes cavities can still develop on the tooth underneath and around a veneer.
  3. Choose a gentle toothpaste. Many dentists suggest avoiding highly abrasive pastes, which may dull the glaze over time. Ask your dentist which product suits you.
  4. Keep regular check-ups and cleanings. Tell the hygienist you have veneers so polishing methods suited to porcelain are used.

Do I need a night guard with veneers?

If you grind or clench, a night guard is usually recommended. A 2018 meta-analysis in the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry found sleep bruxism was associated with higher odds of failure for front-tooth ceramic veneers, although the evidence was of very low quality.

Signs of grinding include worn or flat edges, jaw tiredness in the morning, headaches at the temples, or a partner hearing grinding at night. Lucid Dental Clinic in Gangnam, Seoul, makes custom night guards from ₩600,000 (reference price, confirmed at consultation; about US$430 at roughly ₩1,400 per US dollar). When should I contact a dentist?

  • A veneer feels loose, moves or comes off. Keep it and avoid chewing on that side.
  • You notice a chip, crack or sharp edge.
  • Sensitivity gets worse after the first couple of weeks instead of better.
  • Your bite still feels uneven after a few days.
  • Gums around the veneers stay red, swollen or bleed easily.

Frequently asked questions

Can I eat normally with veneers?

Yes, once any early sensitivity settles, most people eat a normal diet. The main change is avoiding biting very hard items with your front teeth and cutting tough foods into smaller pieces.

Is it okay to use mouthwash with veneers?

Mouthwash can be part of your routine, but it does not replace brushing and cleaning between teeth. If you have composite veneers, ask your dentist which mouthwash they recommend.

Can I get my teeth professionally cleaned with veneers?

Yes, and it is recommended. Let the hygienist know you have veneers so they use instruments and polishing pastes suited to porcelain.

How long does sensitivity last after veneers?

Mild sensitivity to hot or cold commonly fades within days to a few weeks. If it worsens, lingers or becomes painful, contact your dentist so the tooth and bite can be checked.

Can I drink alcohol after getting veneers?

Moderate drinking is generally fine once the veneers are bonded. Red wine can stain the edges and natural teeth, so rinsing with water afterward helps.
